Fleetscale Running Sets & Motors

Fleetscale are now producing their own high quality (as you would expect) running sets. All running sets are made to the same specifications as the example illustrated below. In one or two cases however, the rudders may be made from glassfibre (Yamato for example) with stainless steel shaft and brass bearing tube. The propellers are by Sirtek.

LP800

We have recently sourced a supply of industrial quality motors. These are in a different league to the usual motors offered to the ship modeller. For our models with larger props i.e. over 45mm dia such as the Yamato (55mm) Roysterer (70mm) Type22 in 1/72nd scale (55mm) Type 45 (60mm) Type 42 (55mm) and even the little Bryony and Agassiz (60mm) we recommend the LP800. This is a high quality industrial motor (Buhler) that produces high torque at a low speed of 2,650 rpm. Volts 12-24, 12 pole, bearings, 6mm shaft. The current consumption of this highly efficient motor is in the order of 3 amps. Weight 450 gm approx. You do not need anything faster than this for scale speeds but what you do need is the torque power required for the larger props. Pictured below the LP800 with the Torpedo 500 in the foreground for size comparison.

FP777

For something faster such as the Vosper Fast Patrol Boat with a 40mm prop we now recommend the FP777. This is a powerful quality motor weighing 300gms with 7 poles, roller bearings, and running at 5000rpm - 10,000rpm on 6v-12v. Available to purchase on the Vosper page at £45.50 for two including motor mounts and universal couplings.

SM555

WW2 battleships such as Hood, Repulse, Bismarck etc will have 3 or 4, 40mm or so props unlike the ships in the previous section which will have one or two larger propellers. Also our modern Royal Navy ships in 1/96th scale have a couple of 40mm props. For these we now recommend the SM555, 9v-30v, 5 pole drawing 1 amp. This comes complete with motor mount, suppressors and universal coupling at £17.95. This is another high quality industrial motor that would have cost much, much more than we are charging . Weight complete 240 gms, Length 55mm, Dia 36mm

The Torpedo 500 produces it's power at 13,000 rpm. For the average multi prop hull we are looking for plenty of torque at a lower speed, there is no need to thrash the water at 13,000 rpm. The SM555 will power your boat more efficiently, quieter and will use fewer amps. See under "Products" for these motors.

We are still offering the Torpedo motors. The Torpedo 6v - 15v  motors come with a mounting bracket, a wiring harness and are fully suppressed. In the example of the Bismarck the two outer shafts could be driven with a Torpedo 800 on each (LH & RH propellers) whilst the centre shaft would be undriven. Alternatively, each shaft could be driven with a Torpedo 500 making 3 motors in all. With smaller models such as the 1/96th scale Type 23 & 22 two Torpedo 500's would suffice. The Torpedo 800 is a powerful motor (5167 rpm, 65 watts power output) and will ensure your large model cannot be underpowered. Please note: Running Sets do not include motors and couplings, they must be purchased seperately.

For those modellers who would like to make some parts of the running sets themselves or wish to provide their own propellers we would be happy to supply just parts of any running set for instance running set without propellers, rudders only, A-Frames only or shafts and tubes only. The propellers provided are Sitek and are relatively expensive even though they may be the best. The cost of a typical 4 shaft running set may include propellers at £40. If you wish to fit your own cheaper propellers then you may do so. Just e-mail 4enquiries(at)fleetscale.co.uk with your requirements.
